Unlike other fans, I'm willing to concede that Twin Peaks missed the target from time-to-time.  But when it was good, it was damn great ... and there's still really been nothing at all like it on television.  While some attempts at recreating its mesmerizing and mystifying magic have been good, nothing quite comes close to the original.  It premiered on this day back in 1990 (though it did have a screening in 1989 at an arts festival, but I'm ignoring that in order to honor this date), and it forever changed the landscape that was broadcast television.  Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:

"An idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks."

Heck, I'll bet most of you young Turks don't even know who Douglas Trumbull is, and that's a downright low and dirty shame. Trumbull has been responsible for the special effects of so very many incredible science fiction films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977), and even the seminal Blade Runner (1982), not to mention that he directed Silent Running (1972) and Brainstorm (1983). Though he's no longer with us, Trumbull was born on this day in 1942.

[Source: IMDB.com]

For the record:
  • Trumbull's work was highly regarded by the Motion Picture Association of America.  He earned his first Academy Awards nomination in the category of 'Best Effects / Visual Effects' for his work in bringing Close Encounters Of The Third Kind to life.  In 1980, he received his second nomination in the same category of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  In 1983, he earned his third nomination for his work aboard Blade Runner.  In 1993, he was awarded his first Oscar -- a Scientific and Engineering Award -- for his work in inventing and adapting movement and programming to film.  In 2012, Trumbull received the Honorary Award called the Gordon E. Sawyer Award which is reserved for individuals whose technological contributions have brought great impact to the world of motion pictures.
  • Perhaps equally impressive is the craftsman's recognition from the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films.  In 1978, he recevied a nomination in the category of 'Best Special Effects' for Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.  Though he lost out there, he finally took home his first Saturn Award for his epic contributions to Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  In 1983, Trumbull received another Effects nomination for his work on Blade Runner.  In 1984, he was nominated in the category of 'Best Director' for his work in bringing Brainstorm to the screen.  Lastly, the storyteller was the recipient of the Academy's George Pal Memorial Award, an honor bestowed on individuals who demonstrate a lasting commitment and impact to genre storytelling.
  • At the 1973 Hugo Awards, he received a nomination in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation' for delivering Silent Running to theaters.  In 1984, he received a nomination in the same category of bringing Brainstorm to life.

I penned a few words to commemorate Douglas Trumbull's passing in 2022.  Interested readers can find them right here.

You young sprites have a whole host of SciFi heroes to choose from, but -- back in the 80's -- our choices were pretty slim.  We had to suffer through an awful lot of second rate sci-fi just to have heroes to celebrate ... which brings us to the birthday of Tim Thomerson of Trancers rather dubious fame.  (But, hey, at least it had a sequel, right?)  Happy birthday, Tim!  He was born on this day in 1946.

ExtraExtra Alert:

Kane Hodder is probably best known as the hockey-mask-wearing slasher 'Jason Voorhees' from the popular Friday The 13th horror franchise, but he's been built an incredible career as an actor and stuntman resulting in well over one hundred different screen credits.  I seriously encourage all to surf over to IMDB.com to check out his resume: though you may not known the face, you're no doubt familiar with his work.  Hodder was born on this day in 1955.

And so long as we've already raised the subject of Superman, why not hop on over to the WB's Smallville?  TV actor John Schneider made a name for himself by playing the macho Southern charmer 'Bo Duke' in The Dukes of Hazzard, but genre fans know him best as 'Jonathan Kent' (Superman's adoptive Earthbound father) in the teen drama, and he did a mighty fine job of it.  Schneider was born on this day in 1960.

Can we just agree on the statement: "You've come a long way, Dean!"  Veteran character actor Dean Norris (pictured above under much make from 1990's Total Recall) has earned his stripes, toiling away in one project after another until finally becoming a household name thanks to his work in AMC's Breaking Bad.  SciFi fans are thankful for his work in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Lawnmower Man, The X-Files, It Came From Outer Space II, Dark Skies, Gattaca, Starship Troopers, Millennium, The Cell, Tremors (the series), Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Lost, and Under The Dome.  Norris was born on this day in 1963.

Ouch!  In 2023, The Wrap reported that producer, writer, and director Steven S. DeKnight (longtime Joss Whedon collaborator) recently took to Twitter to attack a Puerto Rican actress not even half his age, calling her "toxic," "entitled," and "unprofessional" ... and he hadn't ever even worked with her?!?!  Not sure if that's ageist, sexist, or racist!  (Sorry, folks, I can't keep up with social norms any longer!)  As Hollywood types do, he apologized online only after being called out for his unprofessional behavior, but -- as they say -- such is life.  So when he's not courting controversy of his own creation, DeKnight is a fabulous talent behind the scenes, having brought to the screen such intellectual properties as Buffy The Vampire Slayer (where it's looking like he learned plenty from Joss Whedon), Angel, Smallville, Dollhouse, Spartacus, Daredevil, Travel Boobs, and the massive Netflix superhero failure Jupiter's Legacy.  DeKnight was born on this day in 1964.

[Source: Google.com]

Even more controversy:
Ach, it looks like the web's 'King Of Controversy' opened his mouth again recently, taking a full-handed swipe at both the Walt Disney Company and Marvel Entertainment, alledging that the companies are in the business of 'scamming artists' or some such nonsense.  (Link)  He again had to come out of the closet to "clarify" his comments so as to avoid some further embarassment to his career of riches.  One would think that a writer would be a bit better with words, no?

For the record:
At the 2019 Saturn Awards, DeKnight received a nomination in the category of 'Legion M Breakout Director' for his work in bringing Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) to the screen.

Actress Robin Wright took a break from mainstream dramas in 2013 to headline the mildly controversial The Congress, a SciFi drama about identity and the entertainment industry.  More recently, she turned up as a police force to be reckoned with aboard Blade Runner 2049 (2017).  Wright was born on this day in 1966.

The very talented but occasionally a little too outspoken actress Patricia Arquette has always impressed me.  As a viewer, she has that unspeakable talent to draw me into her character's struggles with ease.  Genre fans might know her from such properties as A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Tales From The Crypt, Prayer Of The Rollerboys (1990), Nightwatch (1997), Stigmata (1999), Holes (2003), Medium, and Severance.  Arquette was born on this day in 1968.

I've mentioned before that I wasn't one of the many fans who went gaga over all things new-fangled Battlestar Galactica.  When all is said and done, I do still prefer the simplicity of the original over Ron Moore's reboot, and -- despite preferring Dirk Benedict in the role as "Starbuck" -- I did grow to appreciate what the lovely Katee Sackhoff did with the role.  I didn't like her character's twist late in the program, but it is what it is.  Plus, Ms. Sackhoff cleans up real nice in the modern-day cop drama Longmire in case anyone's watching.  (I am.)  Sackhoff was born on this day in 1980.

For the record:
As of today's date, Sackhoff has been nominated by the Saturn Awards in the category of 'Best Supporting Actress On Television' an impressive five times -- four times for Syfy's Battlestar Galactica (in which she won top honors 2006) and once for Disney+'s tepid The Mandalorian.

I realize that the Walt Disney Company expected greater success out of John Carter, but I thought they crammed too much story too quickly into too little film.  Instead, they should've broken it up into a two- or maybe even a three-parter tale, and maybe that would've given storytellers suitable time to flesh out one of SciFi's greatest unexplored properties.  Taylor Kitsch played the lead with respectable machismo.  Kitsch was born on this day in 1981.

On this day in 1915 (in Denmark), the Horror/Fantasy The Golem enjoyed its theatrical presentation.  Written and directed by the team of Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen (who also starred in it), the silent era Fantasy feature also starred such names as Lyda Samonova, Rudolf Blümner, and Jakob Tiedtke.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

Brought to life by an antique dealer, the golem is used as a menial servant. Eventually falling in love with the dealer's wife, it goes on a murderous rampage when its love for her goes unanswered."
