Magic will always inspire audiences of the young-at-heart, and it was on this day back in 2007 that Wizards Of Waverly Place first magically came alive. Created by Todd J. Greenwald, the show starred Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Marica Canals-Barrera, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the series' premise:
"The Russo family may be an ordinary family with an average restaurant, but behind closed doors, all three children must compete to be the next family wizard."
Editor's Note:
Sometime during 2025, actress Gomez used her vast Internet platform to take a stand choosing to side with illegal aliens while ignoring the plight of lawful immigrants and American citizens who'd fallen as victims of the lawbreakers she chose to celebrate. (Link) Though she eventually deleted her related posts owed to backlash, she's never apologized for her anti-American sentiment. Lesson: be better than this, folks, especially when the world is watching.

If evil had a face -- albeit one entirely molded, predesigned, and made of plastic -- then that face would belong to none other than Horror's Chucky ... and it was on this day (in the U.S.) that this devious little menace got his (its?) own weekly television series ... a big feat for something fully fabricated. Created by Don Mancini, the series starred Zackary Arthur, Bjorgvin Arnarson, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Brad Dourif, Devon Sawa, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the series' premise:
"After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town's hypocrisies and secrets."

On this day in 2023, showrunner Mike Flanagan dug deep into the archives of celebrated author Edgar Allan Poe for an 'adaptation' of The Fall Of The House Of Usher, a framework that served as a means to examine a good deal of what Poe brought to life. The streaming series starred Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the series' premise:
"The children of Roderick Usher, a CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, begin to die in mysterious, brutal ways."

The venerable Josephine Hutchinson braved an appearance as 'Grandma Robot' in The Twilight Zone's memorable episode, "I Sing The Body Electric." And you want to talk about bravery? Roughly two decades earlier, she entered the Universal Monster Movies Universe with a top role in the fondly remembered Son Of Frankenstein (1939). Though she's no longer with us, Hutchinson was born on this day in 1903.

For so many of my generation and the one that came before me, The Day The Earth Stood Still's 'Gort' remains the original robot. True, a few years later, audiences were treated to the much more family friendly Robbie and Robot, but Gort always stuck with me, largely because he was so tall, imposing, and mysterious. You never saw any flashing lights or listened to any of his whirling dials, so you never quite knew what to expect from him. He made his intentions known, that's to be certain, and the man under Gort's mask was none other than Lock Martin, who even today decades after his death remains one of the tallest actors ever. Though he's no longer with us, Martin was born on this day in 1916.

1970's No Blade of Grass is one of those Apocalyptic dystopian dramas that may not have a lot of SciFi bells and whistles but instead deals with the aftermath of a society on the brink of extinction. Mark my words: if you were born of a certain generation and you found yourself watching a flick with Daliah Lavi in it, then make no mistake ... you were watching it solely to see Daliah Lavi! Though she's no longer with us, Lavi was born on this day in 1940.

For reasons I couldn't explain exactly, the 1970's had a solid handful of films exploring the dastardly science behind what all of those secret Nazi medical doctors were doing; still, one of those films that's often overlooked was the SciFi-themed Goldengirl starring the lovely Susan Anton. In the film, a neo-Nazi doctor uses genetics to create the perfect female Olympian. Anton was born on this day in 1950.

Again I find myself in the awkward position of 'shilling' for the underrated SciFi gem, Sunshine. Released in 2007, the film largely came and went, not quite filling the bill of a cerebral science fiction film because of the bloody violence included in its big climax. However, actor Hiroyuki Sanada shines in it as one of the crew aboard a doomed ship bent on saving mankind. Sanada was born on this day in 1960.

The plot of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy follows an ordinary Englishman named Arthur Dent who is pulled into an absurd cosmic journey after Earth is unexpectedly demolished by an alien Vogon fleet to make way for a hyperspatial express route. [1, 2]
Key Plot Events
- The Escape from Earth: Seconds before Earth's destruction, Arthur is saved by his friend Ford Prefect—an undercover alien researcher for the eccentric galactic guidebook, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. They hitch a ride on a Vogon constructor ship, endure agonizing Vogon poetry, and get tossed out into the vacuum of space. [3, 4]
- The Heart of Gold: The pair are improbably rescued by the Heart of Gold, a stolen starship powered by the Infinite Improbability Drive. Aboard the ship are Zaphod Beeblebrox (the two-headed, three-armed Galactic President), Tricia "Trillian" McMillan (a human woman Arthur once met at a party), and Marvin (a chronically depressed, hyper-intelligent robot). [2, 3, 5, 6]
- The Discovery on Magrathea: Zaphod is searching for the legendary planet Magrathea, an ancient world that builds custom planets. Once they land, Arthur meets a planetary architect named Slartibartfast. [2, 6]
- The Secret of Earth: Slartibartfast reveals that Earth was actually a massive organic supercomputer built by Magratheans and commissioned by a race of hyper-intelligent, pan-dimensional beings (who manifest in our dimension as mice). Its sole purpose was to calculate the "Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything," following an earlier computer (Deep Thought) determining the answer to be 42. [7]
- Climax and Departure: Earth was destroyed by the Vogons just five minutes before completing its ten-million-year program. Because the mice believe Arthur's biological brain holds the missing question, they try to dissect him. The group narrowly escapes when Marvin depresses a police ship's onboard computer so severely that its life-support systems shut down. [4, 6, 7, 8]
- Resolution: Reunited and hungry, the crew sets course for the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. [9]
