Oh, the amount of ribbing I've suffered over the years at the hands of the Harry Potter franchise ...
Well ... in my humble estimation it might be epic, but that's not what truly matters ... because Google.com reports that it was on this day all the way back in the year 1997 that things changed when author J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury first published Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, the Young Adult novel that introduced a generation to the joys of reading Fantasy literature. From what's been cited online, this first run consisted of only a mere 500 hardcovers along with 5,150 paperbacks ... and that wouldn't be enough to satisfy the growing worldwide demand for readers wanting their introduction to the universe of magic.
Me? Well, the point above is that I didn't read the book until its American debut; and, frankly, I was a bit underwhelmed. Granted, I was much older than the target audience, so it just didn't work for me. Still, I've got nothing but respect for the lady, her imagination, and the fact that she turned an entire generation or two of children into voracious readers, a pasttime many thought had died years ago. Anything that gets young'uns with their faces planted in books will always be a good thing; and that's why I dub this event worthy of SciFiHistory.Net's 'The Future Begins' citation.

One of the acting giants of his generation, Peter Lorre mainly appeared in mainstream fare -- comedies, dramas, and mysteries -- did enjoy a few entries into the realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Not long after fleeing Germany when the Nazis came to power, Lorre made an appearance in the Universal Monsters Universe playing one of the villainous heavies in the oft-overlooked Invisible Agent (1942). It wouldn't be again until 1954 that SciFi and Fantasy came calling again with the Oscar-winning adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea; he played 'Conseil,' the loyal manservant to the scientist 'Pierre Aronnax.' Interestingly enough, ocean-based SciFi would come calling again wherein Lorre played one of the ensemble delivering Irwin Allen's Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (1961) to the silver screen. (You can see him in the picture above: he's the shortest standing man in the group.) Lorre had worked with Allen previously, filling out a role in the director's The Story Of Mankind (1957), a curious and campy effort that had a council of 'galactic elders' debating whether or not humanity was a good idea. While the actor's work in genre projects may have been spare, it was still memorable, as is so very much of what he did.
Though he's no longer with us, Lorre was born on this day in 1904.

Oscar-winning Make-Up pioneer Dick Smith leaves audiences a legacy worth more than a few highlights. Though he certainly didn't specialize in the world of genre entertainment, he definitely assumed a place deserving of some mention toward the latter half of his professional career.
In 1967, he put some of the finishing touches on actors and actresses in the television world of Dark Shadows. In 1973, his talents turned a bit macabre when he was taxed with transforming the great American young girl into a vehicle for demonic possession aboard The Exorcist. Work aboard 1975's The Stepford Wives and 1977's The Sentinel filled the gap between the next Exorcist movie -- Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) -- all of which pretty much paved the way for big stints in such entries as Altered States (1980), Scanners (1981), Ghost Story (1981), The Hunger (1983), Spasms (1983), Starman (1984), Poltergeist III (1988), Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990), TV's Monsters, Death Becomes Her (1992), and House On Haunted Hill (1999).
Though he's no longer with us, Smith was born on this day in 1922.

- Across his storied career, Dick Smith took home top honors in the category of 'Best Make-Up' an incredible three times (out of six) at the Saturn Awards. His big wins? He went home with a statue in 1975 for The Exorcist; he did the same in 1981 for his work on David Cronenberg's Scanners; and, lastly, a second time -- in 1981 -- for his work on Altered States.
- In 2012, the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences award Smith an Honorary Oscar for his lasting contributions to Make-Up across his many, many film projects.
French-born and raised Roland Lesaffre braved the final frontier as part of his duties aboard the campy Star Pilot (1966), a film that has been curiously 'repackaged' with footage from other films more than once. As best as I've been able to surmise, this was the actor's only appearance in Science Fiction: much of his catalogue of work was in French language production, and many of them don't have English translations available on the web. Though he's no longer with us, Lesaffre was born on this day in 1927.

Special Effects wizards are the unsung heroes of both the big and small screens. Perhaps you don't know the face of actress Terri Nunn, but you may've danced to it: her main gig for a number of years as the lead singer for the rock group Berlin. I kid you not: Pushing Daisies was, undoubtedly, one of the best Fantasies to ever come out on broadcast television, lasting two fun-filled seasons but still not quite earning the audience level necessary to sustain it in the competitive environment. Based on box office receipts and DVD popularity, it's pretty clear to me that most folks have never seen much less heard of Safety Not Guaranteed, and that's a crying shame. It's one of the smartest SciFi romantic comedies to come out in ages. If you have an opportunity, then check it out on home video; I suspect you'll be as surprised as I was. Greenberg and Harry Harrison, the feature starred Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"In 2022, Earth is overpopulated and totally polluted; the natural resources have been exhausted and the nourishment of the population is provided by Soylent Industries, a company that makes a food consisting of plankton from the oceans. In New York City, when Soylent's member of the board William R. Simonson is murdered apparently by a burglar at the Chelsea Towers West where he lives, efficient Detective Thorn is assigned to investigate the case with his partner Solomon "Sol" Roth. Thorn comes to the fancy apartment and meets Simonson's bodyguard Tab Fielding and the "furniture" (woman that is rented together with the flat) Shirl and the detective concludes that the executive was not victim of burglary but executed. Further, he finds that the Governor Santini and other powerful men want to disrupt and end Thorn's investigation. But Thorn continues his work and discovers a bizarre and disturbing secret of the ingredient used to manufacture Soylent Green."
For the record:
I always thought that Soylent Green was really one of the first "environmentally conscious" Science Fiction films, something which tried to look at our world as a whole and what we were perhaps doing to it. I'd argue that it certainly sparked a trend in SciFi flicks to go a bit deeper into subject matter than just warp drive and laser pistols. The film was recognized by many to be worthy of acclaim. In 1974, it won the Nebula Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as taking the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. In 1975, it won the Golden Scroll for Best Picture from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.

"Humans are few and far between since Earth was invaded by unseen extraterrestrial machines that harvest the planet's natural resources and relentlessly kill its inhabitants. In a remote part of the countryside, where starved humans have become as dangerous as the alien machines hovering in the sky, a feisty 19 year old girl, Sarah Connolly, sets out on a desperate attempt to fight back a group of bandits and defend her parents' farm, their remaining livestock, and the solar panels that keep them safe from extraterrestrials. If she doesn't succeed, she will lose her only source of food and shelter; but if she resists, she and her helpless blind sibling will be killed. And if the mysterious intruder dressed like a soldier who claims he can help them turns out to be a liar, then the enemy may already be in the house."
