The Andromeda Strain [Limited Edition]

Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel's publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the "killer virus" biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico - and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realizing that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus - codenamed "Andromeda" - before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise's suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative.

THE WORLDWIDE BLU-RAY PREMIERe

“A MUST-WATCH FOR ANY SCI-FI COMPLETIST…
The first full-length feature to tackle the Hollow Earth genre remains deadly serious and never relents
in its bleak cynicism.”

Scifist

In this Cold War variation on Journey To The Center Of The Earth scripted by Oscar® nominee Millard Kaufman (BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK) – and possibly by blacklisted 2x Academy Award® winner Dalton Trumbo – ‘50s sci-fi took a startling turn into a grim abyss: As the world teeters on the brink of nuclear annihilation, a renegade scientist (veteran character actor Victor Kilian, uncredited due to his own blacklisting) assembles a team of experts to drill deep into the earth’s core in search of a new ecosystem where humanity can survive. Otto Waldis (ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN) and Marilyn Nash (MONSIEUR VERDOUX) co-star in this unjustly forgotten classic produced by visual effects artists Jack Rabin & Irving Block (ROCKETSHIP X-M, KRONOS), directed by Terry O. Morse (GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS!) and filmed in Carlsbad Caverns, now scanned uncut in 4K from the protection internegative for the first time ever.

Ach.  54 years of age is far too young for us to lose a talent.

Yesterday evening, I saw a posting on director Robert Rodriguez's feed regarding the passing of actor Nicky Katt; so I wanted to get up a post on it this morning.  Again, Katt might not exactly have been the most well-known commodity for regular readers of SciFiHistory.Net; but like so many in the entertainment business he definitely had a few parts deserving of mention.  Also, while I haven't seen this widely confirmed, I have read it reported that the man took his own life, indeed a very sad development if that turns out to be true.  I don't know what kind of troubles he perhaps was dealing with in his days; but I can't begin to imagine a level of anguish that would force someone to consider suicide.  Just so tragic if true ...

As for those dabblings into the realms of the Fantastic?  Let me highlight them as I see them indicated on IMDB.com:

  • Fantasy Island
  • Herbie, The Love Bug
  • Voyagers!
  • Gremlins (1984)
  • V
  • The Burbs (1989)
  • Martians Go Home (1989)
  • Knight Rider 2010 (1994)
  • Strange Days (1995)
  • Kindred: The Embraced
  • Phantoms (1998)
  • Riding The Bullet (2004)
  • Sin City (2005)
  • Planet Terror (2007)
  • The Dark Knight (2008)

Our warmest prayers are extended to the family, friends, and fans of Nicky Katt.

May he rest in peace.

Readers, word reached the World Wide Web over the weekend of the passing of the acclaimed actress Jean Marsh.

Born in London, England in 1934, the lady's professional career -- at least so far as IMDB.com indicates -- really didn't get started until the 1950's; and she did manage -- even in those early days -- to squeeze in appearances in the realms of the Fantastic deserving of mention.

In 1959, she dipped her toes into true genre magic with an appearance aboard Rod Serling's legendary The Twilight Zone, taking a part in an episode titled "The Lonely."

In 1961, the cult(ish) Danger Man called her into service.  Marsh took on a guest visit in an installment titled "Name, Date, And Place."

1963 saw her first big role on the silver screen in genre circles.  She appeared as one of the ensemble that brought Unearthly Stranger to life for Independent Artists, a flick I've read many suggest should be considered alongside any of The Twilight Zone's best episodes.

In 1970, the wide, wide world of Gerry Anderson came calling, and Marsh joined up for an episode of UFO.  It was called "Exposed," for those of you who might give it a screening.

1974 saw Marsh joining in with names like Christopher Lee, Joan Collins, and Herbert Lom in a bid to bring Dark Places to life.  It's billed as a Horror with romantic overtones.

In 1980, the actress appeared in The Changeling, a much-heralded chiller from Chessman Park Productions.  For those of you who haven't seen it, The Changeling has an incredible reputation of being one of the finer authentic ghost stories ever brought to the screen.  It's the kind of flick that deserves to be rediscovered, if you ask me.

Of course, there's more -- there always is -- including greater contributions to the worlds of George Lucas's Willow and quite an expansive record in the various incarnations of the BBC's Doctor Who.  Thankfully, we'll always have such work to remember us of what a talent she was.  Indeed, Marsh racked up a few honors across her six decades in the business; so I encourage followers to take a gander into her past if for no other reason than to celebrate what once was.

Our warmest prayers are extended to the family, friends, and fans of Jean Marsh.

May she rest in peace.

In doing a bit of research over the weekend, I noticed that Kino Lorber is going deep into their catalogue this June: they're releasing an all-new 4K restoration of 1989's somewhat waterlogged SciFi/Monster-Movie DeepStar Six.  Yes, it's a film I've seen, and I'll likely throw a review up on the site at some point; but, frankly, it's one of those kinda/sorta forgettable features that came and went fairly quickly.  I remember being a bit more excited about its cast than I did anything else in it.  Still, every dog should have its day, and why not get something in 4K if the getting is good?

In any event, I'm doing the copy-and-paste of their brief materials from their website.  Anyone interested in adding this underwater flick to their own library of physical media can click on the link below.

“Considering how little love that Capricorn One has received on home video up to this point, that’s a pretty impressive slate of extras. … The inclusion of the extended Japanese cut is worth the price of admission alone. … This is still the true special edition release of Capricorn One that we’ve always wanted but never received prior to this point. It’s a must-own for Capricorn One fans, Peter Hyams fans, and fans of paranoia thrillers in general.”
