I was asked the other day: "How excited are you for 'The Book Of Boba Fett?'"
If there's one thing I've been consistent about it, perhaps, my entire life it's this: trailers do not excite me.
Now, they used to. Back in the 1980's and maybe the early part of the 1990's there were some fabulous trailers made for genre projects; and like I lot of you I bought into each and every one of them. What happened to turn me against them? Too many disappointments. Way too many disappointments.
After a time -- and maybe greater mileage under one's belt -- you start to realize that coming attractions are specifically constructed to separate you and your money: you have it, and they want it. They'll say damn near anything to get you to come to see their movie, and they don't care what they have to say to get your butt in that seat. They'll lie. They'll cheat. And, yes, they'll steal. Hollywood and those who serve them are that brutal.
Of course, I'm naturally excited to see one of the seminal characters of the Original Star Wars Trilogy getting so prominent a focus decades later. But I'm also one of that contingent who never quite 'got' why everyone was so excited over Boba Fett. Here was the deadliest bounty hunter in the galaxy and -- in The Empire Strikes Back -- he misses what should've been an easy shot to take out Luke Skywalker before the fledgling Jedi crossed lightsabers with Darth Vader. "Oh, he meant to miss!" Yeah. Sure. Tell me another. For what it's worth, Boba Fett proved himself no better a shot than your average Stormtrooper.
Yes, he's got a cool outfit.
Yes, that outfit maybe tied him to some greater and grander mythology.
But he didn't show me any stronger reason to go gaga over him in Return Of The Jedi. He went down for the count as the butt of a visual joke.
And I'm supposed to believe this guy was untouchable?
Stop, stop, stop! Yes, I've seen The Mandalorian Season Two, and I know as all of you do that he was given an incredible grand awakening ... but those of us who are diehard Originalists of Star Wars lore waited decades for that screen time, so I'm just damn appreciative they rewarded us for that ridiculously long wait.
So there. Yes, I see the trailer for 'The Book Of Boba Fett' has dropped, and I'm happy to share it with you. Yes, it looks like we're finally going to get a greater look at the other Dark Side of the Star Wars Universe, and I'm tickled we'll be going there. But I'll reserve judgment until I actually see the finished product.
Like you, I'm hoping they won't disappoint.
