Well, confession time: yours truly wasn't really all that interested in the original.
Now, don't get me wrong. 1988's Beetlejuice is an entertaining enough theatrical romp. It boasts some of the more creative cinematography I think that ever hit the screens -- certainly one of the bright spots of the late 1980's -- and, yet, I just didn't quite care all that much for it. Yes, I thought the cast was pretty solid. Yes, I thought the production design was quite fetching. But it still just never hit the sweet spot for me. It could be that -- back in the day -- it was being pushed as this wonderful comic effort by everyone I knew at the time; and -- you know how that is? -- sometimes I just naturally push back because I can? I don't know. Whatever the case, it's still a great film; and, yes, I do think it's somewhat marvelous that it was popular and endearing enough to those in the biz to come back with a sequel.
(No, for the record, I didn't see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in theaters.)
In any event, I wanted to get the announcement up for those of you who still fight the good fight by purchasing physical media. I suspect this one might emerge as a big seller amongst the various retail outlets who still push discs. Heck, this might be the kind of flick that's worth picking up an extra copy or two for gift-giving, since the Silly Season is officially upon us.
