It was on this day (in the U.S.) all the way back in the year 1966 that home audiences were introduced to a species that would eventually be known as The Lorelei. Originally, Lorelei served as the name for the space alien who came into close contact with the nefarious Dr. Smith in the episode titled "Wild Adventure," and actress Vitina Marcus brought the species to its bold birth on the small screen. The species would return several episodes later -- in 1967's "The Girl From The Green Dimension" -- but now writers gave her the name of Athena of The Lorelei species ... or as they're more coloquially referred to as 'The People From The Green Mist.'
From all I've seen online, audiences don't learn a great deal about the species (not uncommon to creatures crafted solely for an hour or two of episodic television), but we do come to understand that they feed on atomic energy. What I've read on Google.com is that a 'Lorelei' in European mythology refers to a sea siren who lure sailors to their doom; and that's the green-skinned babe's chief function when she's first seen aboard the Irwin Allen series.
So ... let's consider this National Lorelei Appreciation Day in SciFi circles! Go out a hug a green-skinned Lorelei today ... but don't let them lure you to your doom!
