So many movies ... so little time ...

On this day in 2018 (in the Philippines), Mara enjoyed its first theatrical release of record.  Written (in part) and directed by Clive Tonge, the film starred Olga Kurylenko, Craig Conway, Javier Botet, and others.

According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"Police psychologist Kate investigates what appears to be the murder of a husband by his wife, who claims he was the victim of a sleep demon."

From Google.com:
The 2018 horror film Mara follows criminal psychologist Kate Fuller (Olga Kurylenko) as she investigates the case of a man strangled in his sleep and the traumatized daughter who witnessed it. The investigation leads her to a centuries-old sleep demon named Mara, who preys on people experiencing sleep paralysis. The film details Mara's four-stage curse, culminating in death, and forces Kate to confront the demon herself.

Plot Summary
  • The Initial Case:
Kate Fuller, a criminal psychologist, is called to a case where a man appears to have been strangled to death in his sleep by his wife, with their young daughter Sophie as the only witness.
  • Meeting Mara:
Sophie claims a "sleep demon" named Mara is responsible. Kate then investigates a sleep paralysis group and learns that Mara is a legendary figure who appears to people in their sleep.
  • Mara's Stages:
Mara's attack is depicted in four stages:
    1. Paralysis: The victim experiences sleep paralysis and sees Mara.
    2. Marking: Mara leaves a distinctive red mark on the victim's eye.
    3. Physical Contact: Mara appears to touch the victim's throat.
    4. Waking Manifestation: If the victim falls asleep again after the fourth stage, Mara appears in their waking world and kills them.
  • Kate's Struggle:
As Kate delves deeper into the case, she begins to experience sleep paralysis herself and sees Mara. She must find a way to stop Mara before she falls asleep and dies.
  • Confrontation and Resolution:
Kate realizes Mara targets those overcome with guilt. She must save Sophie and confront the demon, but in the end, Kate herself falls victim to Mara due to her own unresolved guilt, and the film ends with Mara lunging at her.
