in memoriam
Folks, I saw the news yesterday when it broke on the Information Superhighway regarding the passage of actor Terence Stamp, but I just couldn't bring myself to put anything up last night.
As a young'un, Superman II (1980) was one of my all-time favorite flicks. Good grief, I can't tell you the number of times I sat through it in my local small-town theater, but I imagine it was more than most of you would even have given the flick a second chance. Yes, it was a bit comic bookish and over-the-top when compared to the serious tone of the original flick; but given that it was delivered with such gusto -- especially with Stamp chewing scenery as the menacing General Zod -- I really just fell in love with it.
Now, I followed Stamp's career just a bit over the decades; and I'll also admit that I sat through a solid handful of projects that, frankly, didn't interest me in the sleightest except for the fact that he appeared in them. While some of them were good, many were ... well ... let's just call them 'curious.' It wasn't that I didn't like the stories, but it was that I didn't quite relate to them on any level that others probably did. As I said, I truly only showed up to marvel at what Stamp could do, so that's all that mattered.
Alas ... none of us gets out of here alive (as they say), and that brings us to where we are.
Our warmest prayers are extended to the family, friends, and fans of Terence Stamp.
May he rest in peace.
