From Google.com:

The Purge: Anarchy is a 2014 dystopian action-horror film written and directed by James DeMonaco. As the sequel to the surprise 2013 hit The Purge, the film expands the franchise's premise from a single home invasion to the chaotic, full-scale violence of the streets. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Released worldwide on July 18, 2014, the film takes place on March 21, 2023. Unlike its predecessor, which was confined indoors, Anarchy follows five diverse strangers trying to survive Los Angeles during the 12-hour annual event where all crime is legal. [1, 5, 6, 7]

The Characters & Plot

The movie revolves around three converging stories:
  • Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo): An enigmatic, grieving police sergeant who heads out into the streets during the Purge on a vigilante mission to avenge the death of his son.
  • Eva (Carmen Ejogo) & Cali (Zoë Soul): A working-class mother and daughter who are forced to flee their apartment after it is attacked by a hit squad.
  • Shane (Zach Gilford) & Liz (Kiele Sanchez): A young, struggling couple whose car breaks down right before the sirens blare, leaving them stranded in the city. [2, 8, 9, 10, 11]

After Leo saves Eva and Cali from their attackers, and later rescues Shane and Liz, the five band together to travel across the city in an armored car. Along the way, they have to survive masked street gangs, mercenaries, and human traffickers who auction off captured civilians to the wealthy. [7, 8, 9, 12]

Themes & Critical Reception

While the first movie was a contained thriller, Anarchy delves deeper into the societal and political commentary that the franchise is known for. The film heavily features a government conspiracy, revealing that the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) use the Purge as a tool of class warfare to cull the lower and working classes. [1, 4, 9, 11]

Critics and audiences generally considered Anarchy to be a massive improvement over the first film, praising its expansion of the lore and intense, action-thriller pace. It was also a massive financial success, grossing over $111.9 million against a production budget of just $9 million. [3, 5, 11]
