On this day in 1976 (in the United Kingdom), Fantasy went more than a little subterranean for the big screen release of At The Earth's Core. Directed by Kevin Connor from a story by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Milton Subotsky, the film starred Doug McClure, Peter Cushing, Caroline Munro, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A Victorian era scientist and his assistant take a test run in their Iron Mole drilling machine and end up in a strange underground labyrinth ruled by a species of giant telepathic bird and full of prehistoric monsters and cavemen."
For the record:
At the 1977 Saturn Awards, At The Earth's Core received a nomination in the category of 'Best Fantasy Film.' Alas, Core lost out on the big win to the French-language Fantasy/Comedy The Down-In-The-Hole Gang (1974).
