On this day in 1924 (in the U.S.), that sterling vista known as New York City, New York played host for an exclusive theatrical premiere engagement of The Thief Of Bagdad. Directed by Raoul Walsh from a story by Lotta Woods, Douglas Fairbanks, Achmed Abdullah, and James T. O'Donohoe, the film starred Fairbanks alongside Snitz Edwards, Charles Belcher, Julanne Johnston, and others.
According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A recalcitrant thief vies with a duplicitous Mongol ruler for the hand of a beautiful princess."
For the record:
- In 1924, both the film and its big star Fairbanks were honored by the Photoplay Awards, the organization recognizing screen excellence prior to the days of the Academy Awards.
- In 1996, The Thief Of Bagdad was inducted into the U.S.'s National Film Registry, that organization which seeks to preserve films that have demonstrated a lasting impact to the medium.
